Whispers from the Deep

This piece, given its size, took a while to put together. It was a test this art I do, having characters in motion. This little boy stands upon the canoe, wearing the face, the Malagan Mask, the 'faces' of those who came before him. The Malagan mask carries memory, spirit and transition, connecting him to a world that existed long before his own. Yet his hand does not point backwards. He points toward the open sea, where a whale rises from beneath the surface, as if answering something only he can hear.

Beneath the water lies a world unseen, vast and alive. In the same way, the dreams of a child can exist quietly within them, enormous even before anyone else knows they are there. No matter where a child is born, on an island, in a village, beside the sea or far beyond it, there is a world within them filled with possibility, imagination and adventure.

The intent behind the creation is to bring together the worlds of those who have gone before us and those who are still becoming. The mask carries the memory of the past, while the child looks toward what lies ahead. And somewhere between the ancestors behind him and the endless ocean before him are his dreams, quietly calling from beneath the surface.
