Walg Kupun

The "Walg Kupun" is a traditional long-handled bilum, known for its intricate designs. These designs have transitioned from using tree bark and bush ropes to modern materials like wool, allowing women to express their creativity. Over time, these designs have evolved, incorporating new patterns and even mixed media elements like cuscus fur. Each pattern is woven meticulously, and they serve as a unique way to tell a story.

Some of these bilums carry the distinct aroma of fire and burnt wood, as they are crafted by mothers who sit by the fire in their "kunai haus kuk," which is a traditional house for cooking. This is the inaugural piece in a series of bilum art, marking the beginning of your mini project series.
