This Tubuan piece was completed on the eve of the 50th Independence Anniversary of Papua New Guinea in 2025. By carefully curating the landscape and the artefacts of the New Britains, mostly from the East New Britain area where the Tubuan culture is well alive and celebrated today.
There are markings developed on this piece hailing from the fishes of the sea to volcanic patterns. The piece is sitting on a background that is inspired by the greenery of the tubuan itself and the spirals adopted from its eyes--an all seeing background that the culture is not only alive but can be seen. It is one of the most fascinating traditions of the Tolai people and Papua New Guinea as a collective.
