Pikinini Blo Mama

In honor of my mother's incredible strength during her battle with cancer, weeks before her passing, I created this portrait of 'Portrait of Resilience.' It captures a special moment from 1998 when we shared joy during the PNG Independence Celebration at Mount Hagen International School.

As my mother fought Stage 3 cervical cancer in late July 2023, I turned to art for solace and distraction. Each brushstroke became my refuge from the looming sadness. The black background represents the darkness of our struggle, while the blue river symbolizes her journey beyond, a belief cherished by many Papua New Guineans.

Amidst grief, I found comfort in the belief that our loved ones watch over us even after death. The river, a symbol of spiritual sanctuary, embraces my mother as she transcends earthly boundaries, forever guiding and comforting us.

This artwork is a tribute to my mother's strength and a reflection of my own emotional journey. May it inspire resilience, offer hope, and honor the enduring love that binds us beyond life itself.
