Part of my Pikinini series, this piece follows a young Western Highlands girl standing quietly in the movement of wind and pattern, looking ahead into a future she cannot fully see yet. Around her, the tribal markings shift and scatter like noise, pressure and chaos, reflecting the world young girls often grow up navigating. Yet despite this, she remains soft, present and hopeful.
The pink gradient and beige tones bring warmth and gentleness into the work, contrasting the tension created by the patterns around her. The leaves over the patterns carried by the wind become symbols of change, growth and possibility. Here, the child is not portrayed as fragile, but important. Seen. Equal.
This artwork speaks about the need to protect our little girls, to nurture their voices, validate their dreams and recognise their value in shaping the future of our communities and our nation. Too often, girls are expected to shrink themselves, remain silent or carry burdens far too early. This piece stands against that.
She represents every young girl with hope in her heart, deserving of safety, encouragement and the freedom to dream without limitation.
