Here is the story inspiration of the creation of Mama bilong Ailan - Torosel (Turtle):

Across Papua New Guinea’s coastal tribes and many Pacific Island cultures, the turtle is a revered totem symbolising longevity, strength, and grace. This piece draws from the story of the turtle who journeyed across the oceans. The turtle grew tired and swam to the bottom of the ocean and brought sand up to the surface. The sand formed and island which would become a place for the turtle to rest -  this island is the island of New Guinea.

Instead of traditional blues, I’ve used earthy tones to reflect this grounding story. Mountain patterns, the tail of the bird of paradise, and a series of four small steps represent the four regions of Papua New Guinea. Gold leaf replaces kina shells—often used on ceremonial breastplates—appearing here on the turtle’s back. In legend, the turtle was female, tying into the broader creation story themes I've been exploring in my work.

The turtle’s ability to move through both land and sea speaks to adaptability and resilience—core values across these communities. Its shell symbolises protection and inner strength, reminding us to remain grounded and calm through life’s tides.

A creature of patience and wisdom, the turtle continues to appear in carvings, paintings, and ceremonial art, reflecting a deep reverence for nature and ancestral knowledge. Through this work, I honour the enduring spirit of the turtle and its sacred place in the stories of Papua New Guinea.
