The Lakatoi is more than just a boat; it's a symbol of hope for the Papuan people. This artwork is a smaller version of a bigger painting I'm working on.

The Lakatoi was crafted by skilled hands to navigate rough seas during the Hiri trade. What amazes me is that this was done without modern technology. People used their knowledge and abilities to build these boats, relying on the wind and stars for travel and trade. The piece is a tribute to the Central Province, a place with a rich culture that has contributed a lot to Papua New Guinea. It's a nod to the people there and the debt we owe to them.

This artwork is a tribute to the Lakatoi and the immense amount of labour and craftsmanship that goes into making this vessel. It's a reminder of a time when people faced the challenges of the sea with determination. This is also a part of the experimental pieces for bigger pieces where I showcase the life beneath the waves as well, shedding light into the vast deep sea marine life that PNG is blessed to have. The lakatoi in itself, even without fancy tools, the way seekers used their skills to build something special. This study piece captures the spirit of using nature to travel and exchange goods, a vital part of Papuan life.

In its simplicity, Lakatoi Legacy invites you to appreciate the deep connection between culture, strength, and the enduring legacy of a people who faced the seas with hope and expertise, leaving a lasting impact on Papua New Guinea's history.
