This piece is part of a collection of my pieces called the Pikinini series. In the last year I’ve been more inspired to create artworks depicting PNG children.

Whenever we talk about the issues facing our country, our children are often left out of the discussion. We forget that they will have to deal will the impacts of our decisions in the future. And we must protect our children, they are the future of our country.

I did this sketch a couple of years back, when I watched the horrific video of that Engan boy, who was just a child, murdered in plain sight while he was being filmed as well and uploaded on Facebook. I created this, for him. I don’t know him. His family or his tribe. But he reminds me so much of the fear and treatment children of PNG, the normalised violence and abuse. It’s not ok but under the pressures of other issues, the children’s needs and their peace, their hope for tomorrow are overshadowed and forgotten.

When represents every child in PNG standing in the face of fear, his last plea for mercy but they chopped him up. Sure he lives in the village but his little heart beat, similar to yours and mine, matters. I hope he’s in the arms of his ancestors, his creator, where he is loved and cared for, for the world he lives could not show him.
